             After the revolution in Russian in 1917 women gained equal civil and political rights and benefited from civil marriage, the ability to get a divorce, maternity rights and equal rights for mothers that were either married or unmarried and in 1920 abortion was legalized. During the early period of the Soviet Union emphasized was a new type of society being built inclusive of new and egalitarian relations between women and men. However, upon Stalin taking power in 1927 traditional values were once again promoted and abortion was made illegal in the year of 1936.
